In 1654, Otto von Guericke demonstrated the power of atmospheric pressure in front of Emperor Ferdinand lll, by placing two hemispheres together and then removing the air from inside. Each hemisphere was attached to 15 horses whose combined strength were not able to pull these hemispheres apart.
