I'd like to apologize for using English language on a russian-speaking forum but my written Russian (unlike my reading) is quite bad. My name is Apostol Apostolov, marketing consultant of "Studio Art Line" LTD., the leading Bulgarian comic book publisher, currently releasing McFarlane's Spawn, Dark Horse's Samurai Heaven and Earth, Sin City, The Goon and various Star Wars titles, TokyoPOP manga, Dupuis, Dargaud, Lombard and Lucky Comics titles, and Bulgarian comics magazine. Our company is interested in the current state of the Russian comic book market, local publishers and production studios. A Russian comics market situation is quite sad. There is only one Russian magazine specialized in original Russian comics as well as several ones that publish US licenced stories. It depends of what do you want to do here: to sell Bulgarian stories, to sell US licenced stories or to buy original Russian comics.

The condition of the Bulgarian comics market has been the same for about decade and a half, with our company being the sole exception to not only survive with over 40 licensed titles published within a year, but keep a steady state of market expansion and rejuvinate the comic book market in our small East European country. One thing that helps the process is that we own our own printing press, advertising agency and we are currently expanding our own chain of specialty stores, selling comics and imported figures and toys from selected manufacturers such as ToddMcFarlane and DarkHorse. We are also tapping our extensive connections with European and US publishers as artist agents.

Our company's current intent is to study the vast Russian market for the possibility to both sell Bulgarian stories from top-notch local artists to Russian publishers and to buy quality Russian stories for publishing on the Bulgarian market. I have been spending the last week reading the forum and can't help but notice that aside from several Antologies and few published titles, among all the Marvels and K9's european mix there is a striking absence of published comics from russian artists on your market. How is this possible and what is the reason for this indeed sad state of affairs? A country of this size and population should have a staggering amount of creative resource, yet none of it is realized on the market. Where does it find it's creative outlet?

Издательства не спешат вкладывать деньги в производство рисованных историй, получая стабильный доход от издания литературы. Освоение нового рынка для них не актуально. А российские комиксмейкеры тем временем вынуждены зарабатывать себе на жизнь в других областях - реклама, дизайн, журнальная и книжная иллюстрация и тому подобное.

"К9" - это украинский журнал.
