Tillie Baldwin, Trick Rider Pendleton Round-Up - Pendleton, Oregon - 1912. Her image was captured by Walter S. Bowman, a professional photographer in Pendleton.

Anna Mathilda Winger, known professionally as Tillie Baldwin, was born on January 11, 1888, in Arendal, Norway. She migrated to the United States at 14 and initially trained as a hairdresser. In 1909, she took a different direction, joining Captain Jack Baldwin’s Wild West show. Adopting the stage name Tillie Baldwin, she went on to establish herself in rodeo competitions.

By 1911, Tillie was already participating in rodeo events, starting with bronc riding in Los Angeles, California. Remarkably, she won her first competition. The following year, in 1912, she garnered more accolades, winning the Lady Bronc Riding Championship both in Los Angeles and at the Pendleton Round-Up in Oregon. At the same Pendleton event, she also secured the Ladies Trick and Fancy Riding Championship and an All-Round title.

Beyond the rodeo circuit, Tillie took on various roles during rodeo's off-seasons. For a period, she was part of Will Rogers' vaudeville troupe and worked with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show from 1912 to 1925. Rogers played a significant role in her career.

In 1913, at a rodeo in Winnipeg, Alberta, Tillie participated in steer bulldogging and the Roman Racing event. She was the only woman in the Roman Racing event at the 1913 Winnipeg Stampede, and she secured a win.

Later in her life, after retiring from rodeo competitions, she became an instructor at the Star Riding Academy in New London, Connecticut, in 1927. In 1941, she settled into personal life, marrying William C. Slate in Essex, Connecticut. Tillie passed away in 1958 at 70 years old and was buried in Union Cemetery in Niantic, Connecticut.

Tillie Baldwin's contributions to the rodeo world didn't go unnoticed. In 2000, she was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. Four years later, in 2004, the Rodeo Hall of Fame, established by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, also honored her with an induction.
